Washington is the 2nd largest producer of premium wines in the United States, behind California. Home to more than 1000 wineries and 400 grape growers, Washington wine country spreads across more than 50,000 acres of vineyards.
Early Washington industry focused on whites, but increased their production of reds when wines like Merlot had a surge in popularity. Nowadays, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are the main red productions of this winegrowing state. Bordeaux blends and Rhône blends are very common and varietals are continuing to become more popular. The best Washington wines, in terms of reds, will be bold and elegant with dark fruity aromas and dry savory tastes.
Riesling and Chardonnay are the white wines that make up the other main productions in Washington. With crisp, floral aromas and plenty of fruit that can be between very dry and lusciously sweet.
