Verite La Joie Sonoma Red Wine 2011 (750 ml) Tasting Notes
Tasting Notes For Verite La Joie Sonoma Red Wine 2011
Vérité La Joie Sonoma Red Wine 2011 is a Bordeaux-inspired blend from Vérité, a Sonoma County estate founded with the goal of combining Old World winemaking traditions with the character of California fruit. Crafted by vigneron Pierre Seillan, the wine is sourced from small vineyard blocks in Alexander Valley, Chalk Hill and Knights Valley, including elevated sites with rocky volcanic, volcanic-ash and gravelly volcanic soils. The blend is composed of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec, and it was aged for 15 months in 100% new French oak.
The 2011 La Joie opens with layered aromas of red and black plum, ripe red currant and tart black cherry, followed by notes of pencil lead, ink, mushroom, fresh herbs and menthol. Cocoa, toast, clove and nutmeg add warmth and complexity, while an earthy mineral character carries through the structured, lingering finish. Pair this refined Sonoma red with grilled ribeye, herb-crusted lamb, braised short ribs, roasted duck, wild mushroom dishes or aged cheeses such as Gouda and cheddar.
Critic Ratings
The 2011 La Joie is also gorgeous and about as classy as they come.
La Joie presents cassis and dark currant fruit alongside lead pencil, flowers, cedar, and herbal notes in a distinctly Bordeaux-inspired profile. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with impressive tannic quality and a poised sense of elegance rather than sheer weight. The finish is long, layered, and refined, showing how successfully the wine balances Sonoma ripeness with classical structure.
Medium-bodied with an impressive attack and mid-palate, some hard tannins give the wine an angular aftertaste.
This Médoc-inspired blend opens with tobacco, forest floor, blackcurrant, chocolate, and vanilla. The palate has good concentration and an assertive entry, followed by the firmer tannic character associated with the 2011 vintage. Its savory complexity and length are notable, though the finish remains slightly austere and angular.
