Tasting Notes and Description

Tasting Notes For Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2019

Crimson red, a shimmer of garnet on rim. Exuberant aromatics. At first, back to school – memories of black jelly beans, then a gentle spectral gradation to red liquorice and redcurrants. Adhering to this color theme, goji berry, wild raspberry and a red-fruited chutney. A transient suggestion of sandalwood spices? Maybe. Well-balanced. Whirling black fruits and an oscillating shiraz disposition – Bin 28 by any other name, personality intact. Flavors akin to a consommé of dried porcini mushrooms; structurally embedded with grainy/sandy tannins. Additionally, tobacco, tobasco and tamarind noted ... okay to mention taut, tenacious?! Exits with an almost negroni / Cynar bittersweet clean finish.

Critic Ratings

Wine Spectator Review - Rated 93:

Ripe blackberry, blueberry and framboise flavors are plump and balanced, with notes of rosemary, sage, black walnut liqueur, Dutch cocoa powder and dried violet, followed by wonderfully velvety tannins on the finish.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate Review - Rated 92:
The 2019 Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz blends fruit from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Wrattonbully and puts it into used American oak hogsheads for a year prior to bottling. Scents of vanilla jump out on the nose but quickly recede under a wave of gently caramelized plums and cherries. Full-bodied and supple on the palate, it's concentrated and lush, with a rich, velvety finish. Once again, it's a fine value in South Australian Shiraz, and exported to the U.S. in reasonable quantities (9,054 cases).

James Suckling Review - Rated 91:
Has quite a distinctive McLaren Vale nose of ripe red and dark-plum aromas, as well as spice and cedary oak. The palate delivers a creamy feel and a plush texture. Good all-round appeal, well-curated and medium-bodied. The obsolete “Kalimna” badge has been dropped with this release. A blend of McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Wrattonbully. Drink while young.
