Tasting Notes and Description

Lokoya Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 is an exceptional red wine from the high elevations of Howell Mountain in Napa Valley, California. Renowned for its profound depth and complexity, this wine exudes an expressive bouquet of blackberries, black cherries, and blueberries, coupled with layers of violet, dark chocolate, and a hint of graphite, reflecting its mountainous origin. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, showcasing firm, grippy tannins and a vibrant line of acidity that beautifully counterbalances the opulent fruit, leading to a finish of impressive length and depth. With its compelling balance, structure, and considerable aging potential, the Lokoya Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 is an exquisite choice for robust dishes or to be savored on its own as a centerpiece of a special occasion.

Critic Ratings

James Suckling Review - Rated 98:
Black currant, violet, subtle grape skin, violet and mountain flower aromas. Medium to full body, with super polished tannins that are finely velvety, long and consistent. Sophisticated and complex. Made from 100% cabernet sauvignon. 551 cases produced.

Jeb Dunnuck Review - Rated 98:

Another prime example of the genius of Chris Carpenter, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain reveals a deep, saturated purple hue as well as textbook Howell Mountain black fruits, scorched earth, savory herbs, bay leaf, and dark chocolate. It's a powerful, structured, full-bodied Cabernet offering remarkable purity as well as overall balance and equilibrium. Hide bottles for 4-5 years (if not longer) and enjoy over the following 25-30 years.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate Review - Rated 97:

Sourced solely from the Jackson-owned W.S. Keyes Vineyard at approximately 1,800 feet above sea level, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain features hints of mint, cedar and pine against a backdrop of blackberry and blueberry fruit. This is full-bodied, rich and concentrated, with a long, velvety and mocha-tinged finish. The tannins are broader and plusher here than in the Lokoya wines from the other mountains.

Wine Spectator Review - Rated 96:

Vivid and brimming with fruit, this offers a deep well of blackberry, boysenberry and mulberry pâte de fruit notes that stretch out lengthily, as graphite, violet, singed apple wood and licorice snap accents add fuel. A focused version, with terrific cut and drive. Showing underlying tension from its rippling acidity, this should age slowly in the cellar while providing a textbook example of a classic Howell Mountain Cabernet. Best from 2027 through 2045. 551 cases made.
