Tasting Notes and Description
Tasting Notes For Orin Swift Cellars Mercury Head Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
A tapestry of our best Cabernet Sauvignon lots from the Napa Valley, Mercury Head entices with a bold wine worthy of the storied histories of each dime. 2016 was a welcome year after the difficult 2015 vintage—a longer growing season and slightly under average yields let to a consistent concentration of flavors. Sourced from premier vineyards such as the Stagecoach Vineyard on Atlas Peak, the Morisoli Vineyard in Rutherford, the Taplin Vineyard in St. Helena and select sites in Oakville and Calistoga, this vintage of Mercury Head is a stellar representation of the great growing conditions of 2017 for Cabernet Sauvignon. While over in Sonoma, we were also able to incorporate a small portion of high quality Cabernet Sauvignon from the Monte Rosso Vineyard into the blend—contributing additional complexity to the resulting wine.
The wine is introduced with rich primary a romatics of cassis, blueberry and black cherry, complemented with hints of lavender, chaparral and sandalwood. The entry is brawny with ripe blackberry and boysenberry that transitions to a nuanced midpalate of dark toffee and espresso bean. Integrated tannins that will soften over time lead a finish of soft rhubarb and licorice.
