Tasting Notes For Charles Krug Family Reserve Generations Bordeaux Blend 2018
Generations is a Bordeaux-style blend created to honor our family's past, present and future. The fruit is night-picked from our estate vineyards in Yountville and aged in new French oak barrels. Aromas of black cherry, coffee bean and blueberry segue to a full-bodied wine with a long finish of ripe berry and toasty crème brûlée.
Most notably, the 2018 vintage for Napa Valley was earlier to start, earlier to finish, and resulted in much lower tonnage than recent years. The weather played a significant part; most of our rain fell in December of 2014, and the following months were much drier and by mid-summer, warmer than usual. After three seasons of high yield, we were due for a correction, and between some cooler weather during set in May, and possibly less water in the soil due to the lack of rain, we did harvest significantly less fruit. However, all the virtues of a smaller crop – small berries, concentrated flavors, good aromatics – are present in the wines.
