Zinfandel is a bold red wine that is jammy, packed with spice and a medium sweet flavor. Zinfandel grapes are often overlooked when compared to other red wine staples (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot), but are extremely popular in the United States both as White Zinfandel wine (zinfandel mixed with white wine) and Red Zinfandel wines.
Recently found to have originated in Croatia, it made its way to Italy where it became referred to as Primitivo. Eventually, it ended up in the United States where it became a very popular varietal. California is responsible for a majority of Zinfandel wine grapes across the United States, with vines thriving across Sonoma County, Paso Robles, Lodi, and parts of Napa Valley. Frog's Leap Zinfandel 2019 - $28.95
Notes: The 2019 Zin is one for the ages and we have already put extra stocks of it into our deep cellar. Tremendous aromatic intensity, yes, but it is the cool, calm and polished flavors that are getting us excited. Fine young—we just had it with chicken mole sauce for lunch—but it is the aging potential of this wine that is truly special.
Bogle Old Vines Zinfandel 2019 - $8.50
Notes: For years, Bogle winemakers have sought out vines ranging in age from 60 to 80 years old for our Old Vine Zinfandel. These gnarly head-trained and dry farmed pioneers produce low yields of small, concentrated clusters of fruit, producing incredibly intense and flavorful wines. Notes of raspberries, peppercorns, juniper, dried herbs and vanilla.
Notes: Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel is made using grapes sourced from gnarled 35-80 year old head trained vines. As some of the oldest vines in California, the fruit produced is exceptional, intense and full-flavored. This intrepid Old Vine Zinfandel has a gnarly core of rich, jammy blackberries and mocha flavors with layers of spice and vanilla balanced by complex French and American oak toast.
Notes: This is a transparent fruit-forward style Zinfandel with juicy red fruit flavors like strawberry, raspberry and black cherry. The wine is plush and soft in the mouth supported by a mouthwatering acidity and warmth of the extra touch of residual alcohol, vanilla, coconut and toffee notes contributed by bourbon barrel aging.
Notes: An expressive burst of aromas of deep dark fruits lead into layered tones of lifted red fruit and a soft, luscious mid-palate. A juicy, vibrant entry with notes of mint, sarsaparilla, and fresh plum is interwoven with supple, textured tannins and acidity on the long, complex finish.
Acclaim: Plump and briary, this is a zesty update on old-school Zin, offering wild berry, underbrush and licorice flavors that build richness and structure on the lively finish. Drink now through 2028. 92/100 - Wine Spectator
